Little Swans is a beginner ballet class where children are encouraged to find the joy in dancing. Children will learn the foundations of ballet through games and exercises designed to challenge them and give them self-confidence. Along with simple ballet basics, students will practice life skills such as taking turns, waiting in a line, and following directions. To help the students understand the fundamentals of dance, emphasis will be placed on listening to the music, rhythm, and coordination.

The most important thing for me is this class is fun for the students. I want them to love dance as much as I do. For most of the students this will be their first dance class, I want it to be positive, and joyous. I understand that children this age may be hesitant to participate in class, therefore I create a welcoming environment for all children. If a child is nervous and hesitant to enter class I encourage them to watch and invite them to join any time they are ready, sometimes they need a moment to see what the class is before they feel safe to come in with the rest of the children (this was me when I started).

We always start the class the exact same way with a series of stretches. The repetition helps children get comfortable and signals to them the class has started. We then stand up and will go over some basic positions and steps that form the foundation of ballet. Each class is structured around the positions and steps we are learning that day. After we learn and practice our positions we do combinations/obstacle courses/games for them to practice the positions while moving through the space. We always end class with a ‘dance party’ to an upbeat pop song. After all their hard work they get to let loose.
